So wait, within the canon of the Avatar world, the Kyoshi Warriors’ outfits and makeup are taken from Avatar Kyoshi, yeah?

But then where did Avatar Kyoshi get that look?

Because until I get an answer to the contrary, all I can assume is that she just up and decided to make herself up like that, took one look in the mirror and thought, “Ah, yes, this is my aesthetic.”

And if that’s the case, she truly is the greatest Avatar of all time.

I mean she was also really tall…trans avatar Kyoshi who likes Drag aesthetic?

YOU. I LIKE YOU.

my actual headcanon is that she was a trans avatar.

I like to think that the avatar cycle tends to cycle between male and female (with maybe fire to air staying the same so that the gender/element pairing is flipped every so often), and Kyoshi was born at a time when some other despot had the bright idea to kill any potential avatars as infants.

But they only targeted kids they thought were girls. This not only allowed Kyoshi to survive the massacre, but also left her with no compassion for dictators like the ones who killed so many of her people.

I’ve also thought that the Earth Nation (or at least their aristocracy) seems to have much more rigid gender roles than some cultures. I think Kyoshi adapted her look as a loud declaration and celebration of her femininity in spite of the opinions of many of those in power. She then became so much of a badass that none of them dared to challenge or disrespect her.

I also like to think that Kyoshi Island follows in this tradition, with women of all body types invited to celebrate holidays centered around Kyoshi. Obviously only those trained as Kyoshi Warriors wear the full uniform, but any women can don celebratory robes and paint their faces in the style of Kyoshi on holidays. I like to think that women who cannot be themselves in other parts of the Earth Kingdom will sometimes journey to Kyoshi island, knowing that they will be accepted there.
