You guys are forgetting about the absolute wealth of writing talent that is the scene where an asian kid is explaining to the protagonist that his older brother had committed suicide and Ernest Cline had the balls to replace the word suicide with seppuku in a completely non-sword related death.

you’re forgetting how whenever he writes the name of anything japanese he spells it phonetically, even when it’s completely english words

or how when it’s time for an action scene it degrades into full on ebony raven way-tier ‘it was just like in that movie x, when’

not to mention the part where the author created a legitimately interesting and compelling character and then did absolutely nothing with her for the entire book

(I’m talking about Aych, the black lesbian who uses a straight white man for an avatar explicitly because it means people take her more seriously in her competitive gaming tournaments and is paranoid enough about people finding out who she is that she successfully manages to be anonymous other than her username for years. She exists for no reason other than to be a pointless yes man for the useless protagonist. I hate this book.)
