I know there are a million reasons for it from a public and scientific standpoint but I think it’s hilarious how quickly we become disenchanted with nuisance wildlife and in particular with the coyote like

there is something undeniable about the way a wolf howl haunts us as humans. the call to something vast and far-off and dark. it terrifies and inspires us. we’re captivated by wolves and their stories and lives and if someone told us “hey there’s a wolf in your backyard” we’d mob the windows with a camera, some may even go outside. but if we got there and found out it was a coyote instead we’d be like

“oh whatever it’s just that OTHER GIANT WILD CANID that stalks the night in the shadows and the corner of our eye who cares”

there’s this romanticization of Clean Wilderness™ that wildlife we consider “commonplace” can’t really uphold. they’ve failed to be “wild enough” & so therefore they are Dirty and Gross Disease Carriers, Unclean

and it’s fucking bullshit. i love the wild things that have moved into our places. i love that as we build, other living things find ways to use our structures in ways we never meant them to, but here they are, anyway, coexisting with us. foxes eat our trash! falcons nest on skyscrapers! crows use our cars to crack shells! pigeons, oh pigeons, they’re everywhere! i love it. i love them. they’re doing so good and i’m so proud of them and i’m always glad to see them

Oh no I totally agree but for the record, I think coyotes are beautiful and would love to see them in their historic range. However, coyotes aren’t supposed to be where I am. They’re only here because we killed the wolves. They’re a nuisance species that often overburden prey populations. That’s my gripe.

Coyotes are valid and wonderful animals to observe.

As long as they aren’t anywhere near my future property

I intend to have quite a few cats

If you have cats, keep them indoors. outdoor cats are responsible for the extinction and endangerment of more than one species of wild animal.

What’s more is, you could shoot 10 coyotes in one day, and more would take their place just as soon.

I know this is going to sound incredibly harsh, but if you let your cats out to damage the ecosystem, and then another predator hunts your cat, well. That’s nature and nobody else’s fault.

It’s your job to keep your cat safe,

I once saw a coyote chasing a roadrunner across the parking lot at work here in Tucson.
