What’s your opinion on neutral evil players in a party? Do you think it can work well? I typically let my players choose whichever alignment they want with a “but you have to accept the consequences” clause

It would definitely work! Neutral evil means you do what’s best for you, with no regard to other people. But there are many ways to find into the standard adventuring party. Maybe you want the loot. Maybe there’s some great threat and you need to defeat it. Every alignment works with everything, depending on how you put it.

“Neutral Evil: Gets Shit Done”

Neutral Evil “does what’s best for you” but there are many ways to interpret that statement.

Neutral Evil Rogue; find all the traps and disarm them completely so that a swift escape is easy and safe. Find all the best and most powerful magic items, and make sure they go to the people in the party best capable of using them to keep you safe. Sneak Attack the big boss when he’s not looking to make sure the party stays alive long enough for that reward to come through from the king.

Neutral Evil Mage; buff the paladin until he can’t move but destroy your enemies. Keep a Dimension Door on hand at all times to pull out and get reinforcements. Use Detect Thoughts on the captured prisoner to get the information you need without wasting time.

Neutral Evil Fighter; exploit the weakness in your opponent to end the fight quickly and mercilessly. Use bleed weapons, poisons, anything that gives you the edge. Put your armour between the enemies and the Mage.

Neutral Evil is all about results, no matter the cost. It can be extremely fun, and very, very helpful to the party who are not too squeamish.

You actually know people that fit this alignment.

Your friend who could give a fuck what people say about them but talk shit about other people all day.

That relative who wants to go drinking and talks you into going then leaves you there because they found someone they want to hang out with instead.

That guy who switches drinks with you when you’re not looking because you still had more left in yours and they didn’t want to pay for another drink themselves.

The girlfriend who uses your last tampon and never buys you more.

How about that dad that works part time and drinks the rest of the time then complains because no one pulls their weight?

Dude who unscrews the lids from salt shakers in restaurants because he thinks it’s funny.

That jerk who keeps on driving when he sees someone injured because he doesn’t want to get involved.

That girl who gossips about others even if they know the other person can hear them.

Neutral Evil is more about not caring if someone dies through negligence on your part that reckless homocide.

Serial killer is not an alignment, it’s a mental illness.

hey uhh just a quick note: “serial killer” is most decidedly *not* mental illness, and that idea is directly harmful to people who do have mental illnesses

Oh Shit sorry

You’re right

I’m glad someone pointed that out.

for my own thoughts on this… Neutral Evil is also a very mercenary tendency.  “Its not personal, its just business.”
