Wow. I was a HUGE fan of the ReBoot franchise as a teenager in the 1990s – I wrote tonnes of fanfic about it, I participated in the fandom, it was a huge and important part of my life. I had friends I met in that fandom that are now mutuals on twitter with me, 23 years later.
ReBoot is being rebooted (sigh) to be this and it is just………….NOTHING like the original. Like, not even a fucking ghost of the original. In the original ReBoot, the characters were fully CGI-animated programs inside a computer who were given personalities similar to their programming (Dot the entrepreneur was the task manager/office organiser program, Bob the Guardian was a Net Security and Anti-Virus program, and the bad guys were fucking VIRUSES IT WAS SO COOL), and it was STATE OF THE FUCKING ART full CGI animation. And I fucking LOVED it with all my heart and soul. I rushed home to tape episodes of it on VCR tapes. I played those episodes over and over while I write fanfic. The characters were corny but compelling, the writing was interesting, at times silly and at times heart-wrenching, and it was absolutely one of the most creative cartoons and ideas I’d ever seen. Also, it had the longest fucking slowburn romance a cartoon had ever seen in its entire life, I swear to god.
Now. Reboot is rebooted. Instead of this highly creative show, we’ve got a low-budget high school super-hero drama with a token girl (look! here she is taking selfies!), a token black guy (Look! Here he is playing basketball!) and somehow that computer chick from 100 got in and is now much younger and much less compelling version of herself and it’s just like…. This could be any random teenage super hero show. There is absolutely NO SIGN of ReBoot in any of it.
Where’s my incredibly creative, compelling cartoon from the 1990s? It’s like they didn’t reference the source material hardly at ALL.
Man, I’m so upset. Why couldn’t they have please at least stayed trued to the original idea of the show, even if they didn’t use the original characters? Or if they couldn’t, maybe they couldn’t have teased a ReBoot reboot when it’s a fucking completely different show they should have just made a totally different show?!?!?!
I just. MAN, I cry. They’ve been teasing rebooting ReBoot since the early 2000s and I was so excited to see what new technology could to do to the old show I loved and the old characters I loved. This isn’t even NEARLY the same show, not at all. All that’s the same is the name and the ReBoot logo.
RIP, original ReBoot. I fucking loved you, and I loved every second I spent with you.
ALSO FUCKING HELL, that green woman there? With the Short hair? She’s how I fucking realised I was attracted to woman when I was 14 years old. I used to have a print out of her on my wall and one day I caught myself gazing at it like…. o-oh. I’m attracted to her :O
