The Dinosaur Lords, The Dinosaur Knights, The Dinosaur Princess – Victor Milán
Read (The Dinosaur Lords re-read): Aug 2017; Aug 2017; Sept 2017
I seriously love these books. I have a BSc. in paleontology, which might speak to me having a snobbish attitude towards these. But I don’t. I have cherished the idea of riding dinosaurs since I was a small ass child. It never stopped and never faded. So when someone comes along and gives me war hadrosaurs I am here for it. Now I’m not particularly a medieval knights type of person but put those armoured men on dinosaurs and you have earned an immediate convert.
Obviously I could rave about the dinosaurs in these (especially the common names Victor Milán invented for them, something which I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about, since in science we use the binomial species name ALL the time and I find this onerous), but I have other things I like about this series. One is the inclusion of homosexuality. It’s not the best to be frank, but it’s there and it’s not treated especially strangely. Not the representation I would have hoped for, but in fantasy I hardly hope for seeing gays at all anymore. Another thing I like is the world building. I especially enjoy the social acceptability of wearing very little because of the basically Cretaceous climate (I am here for that). Finally, I like the plot. It’s interesting and it’s engaging and I was always ready to find out where it was going, what the next twist or revelation was. It was very enjoyable.
But of course my favourite thing was the motherfuckin WAR HADROSAURS.
