Has anyone ever played an automaton in D&D? I… am intrigued at the possibility…
do you mean like the warforged? or as a home brew
Homebrew probably… I was thinking maybe something created to protect a particular remote town from danger, only to be left behind when the town is abandoned. It spends years just guarding a pile of rubble until someone stumbles across it and suggests doing literally anything else with its life, like ‘make friends’ and ‘see the world’ and ‘dress up in a really big scarf and an even bigger hat and pretend to be a human’.
I would agree that a golem fits this best. The Adventure Zone has a NPC golem named Roswell protecting an old west town in one of the arcs.
I specifically do not want to play a golem, is the thing.
Its not a d20 system like D&D or pathfinder, but there’s a d6 game called What’s Old is New and in the NEW setting they have androids. Their system is deliberately designed though that you can take anything from one of their source books and drop it in another. So if you wanted to use the character creator to make an Robot and then drop it into their OLD setting as an automaton you would have full freedom to do so.
