So you know that ability they have, Avenger’s Shield? Yeah, who does that? Who just chucks their shield? Not a knight, that’s for dang sure. But guess who wasn’t a knight first before becoming a paladin? Turalyon, that’s who. So, I propose the following:
Uther is fighting an ogre or something, and an orc is sneaking up on him. Turalyon has injured his hammer arm, and is trying to get to the orc but is too heavily armored and he doesn’t have the stamina the others do yet. So what does he do? He shouts a prayer to the Light and just flings his shield. The other three see this, and Saidan is just like, “Did he just….?”
And Gavinrad and Tirion are just like, “Uhhh…..”
It works, and his shield comes flying back to him. The orc is stunned long enough for Tirion to dispatch it, and then the four of them go help Uther finish off the ogre. After they do, Gavinrad turns to Turalyon and goes, “Why would you throw your shield?”
“I needed to stop the orc?”
“So throw your hammer! You know how!”
“I hurt my arm…”
“That makes it worse! You need your shield even more then!”
“But the orc would have killed Uther! I had to do something!”
“Yes! But why the shield????”
“Because I had faith in the Light it would be returned like my hammer is…”
And the others are just like:
But it gets better. Tirion decides to give it a try. It works, and he likes it. It eventually becomes a competition to find the strangest thing to throw, culminating in the battle at Blackrock Spire in which Tirion uses a sword to one shot an ogre, saving Alexandros Mograine. Or spoiling his fun. Depends on who you ask.
I love this. And from then on they teach it to new paladins (lady Liadrin was skeptical but eager to learn more) eventually realizing that if they throw it just right, it bounces, and they hit more targets that way.
