Just in case you forget this exists.

It exists.

With those “when you want to design a character but you don’t know color theory” posts flying around I thought this would be relevant again.

SLAMs THE REBLOG BUTTON

there’s also Coolors website that gives you randomized palettes!

image

Don’t forget ColourLovers, either! It’s a social media-esque site where you can browse tons of palettes and share your own.

You can browse the most popular ones or search for certain colors, themes, and even specific hex codes!

When you find one you like, you can download a wallpaper swatch of it and also select the specific colors it uses to look at more palettes that use those same ones.

ColourLovers is my go-to for when I’m having trouble coming up with a color scheme! It’s also been around for over a decade, so there’s plenty to browse through.

OKAY SO PEOPLE WANTED TO KNOW SO I DID MY BEST TO REWRITE IT!

(I HOPE IT MAKES SENSE I AM VERY TIRED AND THIS IS A LOT OF TEXT.)

My HC for Dwarf Beards and Gender Presentation

So the first thing you need to know is the average dwarf will have a primary braid and a secondary pair of braids to either side of it.  These two sets of braids denote different things so

Primary Braid

image

The Primary Braid is the large braid down the center of the beard.  Traditionally there are three recognized genders in Dwarven Society, though they do acknowledge an individual’s desire to express themselves in new ways.  A traditional 3-strand braid denotes male preferred pronouns, a 4-strand braid denotes female preferred pronouns, and a 2-strand twist denotes a non-binary dwarf with gender-neutral pronouns.  These are entirely based on gender expression and not related to sex or genitalia of the dwarf, which is considered a private matter that matters to no one but the dwarf and their mate.

It is possible for a dwarf not to have a primary braid, but this style is considered a time of transition or change in a dwarf’s life, and gender-neutral pronouns should be used until otherwise stated.  Some dwarves cut off their primary braid when moving away from their home so as to reevaluate and reinvent themselves in their new residence, but it is not something all dwarves do.

The majority of dwarves use he/him pronouns outside of all-dwarven societies due to gender stigma against female presenting dwarves by other species, but in an all-dwarven society the mix of genders will be fairly even.

To save timelines I put the rest under the cut, but I talk about more below!

Caught in a rather good romance

It sounds like I’m playing a video game and someone is trying to sell me potions. 😀

…that is exactly what it sounds like

Hey mom! I have a question for you. How much do you charge people for editing their work. I have a friend thats writing his first novel, its gone through the first and second drafts already. I beta read it and helped with what little editing i can do (my grammar knowledge is terrible). Anyways, his book is a really good blend of scifi and fantasy and has interesting takes on classic fantasy species. He says hed want it to be edited in 10k chunks, its around 70k in its entirety.

thebibliosphere:

Hey fam thanks for asking! My rates are something I outline in detail on my Editing Services page, but the quick low down is:

$25per hour for anything under 10k words, and $50ph thereafter.

There is
a flat rate $50 reading fee for anything over 10k ($100 for anything
over 100k). Student rates are available, and payment plans are also an
option we can discuss during consultation. I will also do a sample edit (usually between 1-2k words, to make sure we’re a good working fit together.)

All further inquiries pertaining to this can be directed to editing @ joydemorra.com

just uh, reblogging this for later reference.

dear robot stories

stop saying “sentient” when you mean “sapient”

Can you explain the difference

Sure, but only specifically in a sci-fi context. Once you really start getting into philosophy of mind and biology, it gets confusing.

“Sentient” means to be able to perceive, feel, and/or be aware of the surrounding world – to have senses that allow one to experience things. Animals are sentient – they are able to hear, see, smell, taste, and/or touch. Plants are also arguably sentient, albeit in a much slower and more cryptic way than animals – but we don’t generally count them as such for practical purposes (I could… get into this). If you built a robot no more intelligent than, say, a goldfish, but it was able to see or smell or feel pain, it would be sentient, but not sapient.

“Sapient” means human-like wisdom or self-aware intelligence – the ability to engage in complex reasoning and judgement. In sci-fi, it usually denotes personhood and identity. A computer could therefore theoretically be sapient, but not sentient.

Robot stories are almost always about exploring the formation and value of consciousness and personhood. Star Trek is probably in large part to blame for “sentience” to mean “sapience” in loads of media – it’s certainly the reason I used to get it wrong! I lost count of how many times Data refers to himself as “sentient” when he’s describing self-awareness aspects of his personal identity – he even contrasts himself with his cat, claiming she is not sentient (he’s uh… wrong…).

Data is, of course, both sentient and sapient. An android that can walk around and respond to the world around it, using artificial senses that allow it to gather information from its surroundings, is sentient. (Being able to analyze flavor, scent, and temperature counts as sensing – not just seeing and hearing). An android that can reason and form self-awareness is sapient, whether or not it has traditionally human-like emotions. HAL 9000 is obviously sapient, but his sentience is limited.

Tried to infuse a jar of honey with blueberries.

Yeah…that went well. I shoulda squashed them first, because now they’re just floating at the top and not doing anything.

Tried squishing them against the glass, but they’re refusing to pop.

Sad blueberry honey experiment is probs just gonna wind up on toast and will not be spoken of ever again.

OH GOD IT’S BEGINNING TO FERMENT

I think I ruined a perfectly good jar of honey 😦

NO YOU STARTED A PERFECTLY GOOD BATCH OF MEAD.

Lean into it!

WHAT SHOULD I DO

add water?

(it’s prob .6-.75 lbs of honey, for the record)

OKAY SO

Get some more honey. I use 3 pounds for a batch of mead.

Take half a gallon of water. Heat it until just simmering, then remove from heat and stir in honey. Once it cools a bit sprinkle in…oh, in this case, maybe a teaspoon of yeast. White wine yeast works best but regular will work ok too.

Sterilize something to let it ferment in. A milk jug would work. Splash a little bleach in there, fill with water, let sit a bit, then wash out well.

Once fermenting vessel is sterilized, pour the honey/water/berries/yeast in. Take a balloon and stretch it over the top of the jug, and prick a pinhole in it. This will keep outside wild yeasts out but let out co2 as it ferments.

Leave it for a month or so.

Then, bottle and drink!

YIELD; 1 gallon of mead, or about 4 ½ 750 mL average size wine bottles.

It doesn’t matter if the jug is glass or plastic!

I use a 1 gallon glass jug that used to contain vinegar.
