100 words –

Life didn’t always used to be this bad for you.  You had a spouse, pets… and apartment.  It all crashed down when you let your past catch up to you.  You lost all of them. Splatters of red everywhere.

You’re all tied up now, by the past.  You struggle against the ropes, tears slipping out of your eyes as the agony wracks your body. Blood soaks your bindings, warm against the cold skin of your hands.

You look up into a face you used to have memorized as they drag a knife up your cheek, “Did you miss me, master?”

100 word story

Something has happened to you.  You were different before, you think.  Ordinary.  Then you laugh, how could you have ever been ordinary?  You, the shaper and forger of the universe?

You reach for a planet and prod the decisions of a few life forms and then watch as time goes by.  Two species rose for dominance on the planet thanks to your actions.

They destroy each other.

Something within you recoils at this.  This callousness with which you regard the lives of and entire planet… And you remember. Your mortal life floods back and all you can do is scream.

Brightly Burning (Mercedes Lackey) – Kindling

Why, Anon.

———

On the front Lavan tried not to watch the campfires. He was a Herald now, yes, but they still reminded him of everything that he had done… and still continued to do.

He’d murdered his bullies.  They’d gone up like fatlighter.  Like firestarters.

Like kindling.

And then there was Kalira.  She was here, she was with him.  A comforting presence at his side and in his mind. She was there for him always.  His very best friend in a world that he could not escape.  And while he had her, why would he?

Stop thinking about it.

And he did.

The Black Gryphon (Mercedes Lackey) – Wind

Skandranon did not often take night flights for joy.  He took them in order to fight the for Urtho.  To fight for freedom and peace.

Tonight would be different for him. Tonight he beat his wings through the still air of the night and raced towards the sky.  No one would blame him for letting the wind of the upper sky fill his wings as he tried to sooth the horrors of the war from his mind.

Who would blame him for taking to the sky to keep his thoughts about Zhaneel from keeping everyone else awake with his restlessness.

The Last Herald-Mage (Mercedes Lackey) – Sunset

Sefan let loose his horse, she knew the way home and he wouldn’t be needing her. The Herald who was bringing him through the forest would forget him, and he would finally join his Vanyel in death.

He set his harp down and lowered himself to the ground at the base of a tree.  The Sorrows had never bothered him, and he longed to return to them while fulfilling his mission.  He smiled and closed his eyes as the setting sun bathed him in its light and when he rose again, his spirit was finally free to join his lifebonded.

100 word prompt – Fear, Prey

Heart thundering, feet pounding. You can hear the whistling of the wind past your ears even as your pulse thunders through the sound.  Your chest heaves and you want to break down and cry but you can’t.

You have to keep running.

The monster is chasing you, somewhere behind you it thuds and pounds, like a heartbeat but slower.

Hungrier.

Teeth and claws and empty eyes just waiting to tear you apart… one way or another. If you let it catch you, let it taste you, taste your fear maybe you’ll survive.  You start to slow, pulse surging through you.

100 word prompt – Winding Circle (Tamora Pierce) – Dandelion

Briar still remember his lessons.  Still remembers what Rosethorn had taught him so long ago. Weeding still hurts, but he does it for the rest of his garden.

She would be proud if she were still around, watching him on hands and knees pulling out the small plants crowding around his own.  He reached for one, and then pulled his hand back.

The golden head of the dandelion swayed with the breeze and he watched for a long moment before he went to his tool shed and carefully excavated it from its spot and gave it it’s very own place.

100 word prompts – Young Wizards (Diane Duane) – Moon dust

Dairine settled into her usual spot, protected by the spell she could cast as easily as drawing breath. So many things had happened to her and she didn’t even know where or how to even begin to untangling what happened.

Nita would be pissed if she knew Dairine had gone without her.

She kicked up a puff of dust from around her feet and watched it fall slowly back to the surface.  Dairine grinned and picked up a handful and blew it out beyond her shield, taking in the sight of it racing across the moon, carried by her breath.

100 word Prompt – The Bartimaeus Trilogy (Jonathan Stroud) – Tyranny.

More of a personal Tyranny here.  I did a bit of reading and decided to go with a personal tyrrany.  I read some articles and some summaries and i love you nonny, I hope this wasn’t too off mark.  If I had to read this book i never would have gotten to this prompt!

————–

Nathaniel (no, Mandrake.  He was John Mandrake!) stood over, literally over, the tiny and pitiful creature that he had summoned as practice. “You will do as I command.” He said in a commanding tone, looking over to his mentor for quick reassurance.

He received a frown.

He turned back to the imp, rage on his face as he repeated himself sharply, causing the creature to cower before him. Yes.  That was good.  He thought about what he wanted, what he could do. He grinned. He knew what to do. What his master would do.  He raised his hand and spoke.

100 word prompts – Temeraire and Snow

Temeraire normally did not care one way or the other for snow.  It did not bother him and he did not bother it.  For the most part.

Today was different though.

He snorted, sending a plume of vapor from his nostrils and surged to his feet.

Today was new.

In a flash he ran outside of his warmed and sheltered overhang, rolling and frolicking in the snow as if he’d never had a chance to before. In a way, he hadn’t.  From his birth it had been sailing and learning and war.  But today he was free.

Today he played.
