Observation on Fandom Trolls

fritti13-blog:

I’ve never understood the inclination of some people to go
onto another fans page or fanfiction comments to shit all over someone else’s
tagged work because they don’t like the content.  It’s like spying a bag of clearly labeled
black licorice and, knowing the you HATE black licorice, willingly opening the
bag, eating the licorice, then writing the candy company a scathing letter
because their product tastes like black licorice!  The logic completely escapes me.

The only reason I can find for someone to read a correctly
tagged story that they KNOW beforehand has content that they will either hate or
find disgusting (to them), and then attacking the author for the content
contained therein, is that they either have an overly inflated sense of self-righteousness
or they like to indulge in general ass-holery.
Either way, they are deliberately trolling for a fight, which is
repugnant.

i still think d.va is cool but what i liked about her was “d.va, beloved esports professional and charismatic entertainer” and that seems to have been displaced by “d.va, dorito gremlin” and then “d.va, the literal infant daughter of the other characters” so there’s not much quality d.va content of the sort i’m interested in floating across my dashboard these days

like d.va’s in-game characterization seems haughty, immature, and incredibly cocky, but sometimes she seems like the FUCKASS KARKAT™ of the overwatch fandom. d.va is a national celebrity, streams herself fighting giant robots, apparently built a starcraft career on playing random (!!!!!!!!), has appeared in bad movies, and says dumb memes as she jumps out of her exploding MEKA and runs away before it kills her, too (well, before the patch).

she’s….. i think shes cool ok.

this is a really good post n like i dont wanna add unwarranted fake meta or w/e but its especially jarring to me as a korean girl seeing this mountain dew gremlin content and im absolutely sure that its almost entirely racialized

like..the treatment of her sport is super humiliating and like ofc gaming culture is absolutely fuckin ridiculous but theres a huge difference between the reception it receives in western n korean cultures wrt those competitions and this is coming frm someone w family members who were like..legit starcraft competitors like dva

n ive seen a lot of white/non e asian fans claiming that this characterization of her is somehow progressive bc they dont want to see her fetishized, so clearly the answer to this is to..entirely infantilize and humiliate a canon woc? man i jus want cool dva stuff like shes really dorky but i dont wanna choke on dorito dust every time i look at fanart of her 😦

look, fandom as a whole certainly has its own built-in biases and problems that need to be addressed

but like

every so often i think about all of the deep, nurturing lifelong friendships that only ever happened because one day two internet strangers were like ‘oh hey, we agree on which fictional characters should kiss!’

people who are right now helping each other survive via connections they initially forged by liking the same sailor moon girl or something

the internet is a goddamn garbage pit but it is also a goddamn miracle

#goddamn garbage miracle
