Net Neutrality is a lost cause in 2017

solacekames:

It’s the 14th of December and net neutrality is going to be repealed this morning by FCC vote. It’s going to happen and there’s nothing we can do about it.

Yes, this is very bad.

No, this is not going to mean you instantly lose access to your internet community. That change is going to move at a pace measured in years.

Unlike the changes Republicans have made in healthcare, foreign policy and immigration, which have already irreversibly destroyed marginalized people’s lives, the destruction of net neutrality is a change that can be reversed less painfully. We just need to reestablish a legislative majority in the Congress, which is also the only way Trump will ever be impeached, and then a new net neutrality bill can be passed.

You have to support Democrats in the 2018 elections to get this done. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are, that’s the only way we’re going to get this done. You don’t have to be a Democrat or give a shit about the party platform (a lot of Democrats don’t even know their party platform or care about it) but you still have to enter into a coalition with them. This doesn’t mean never ever criticizing Democrats, it just means recognizing that the Democratic party is currently the most effective and relevant political space to mobilize on this issue. If you’re a socialist, support socialist Democratic candidates or support a non-socialist Dem candidate and try to push them left.

There’s no other non-magical way that we’re ever going to get net neutrality back.
