PSA: COUGH MEDICINE + SSRI ANTIDEPRESSANTS CAN KILL YOU.

I am apparently very very lucky that I had a low dose of both. Google tells me that what I had on Saturday was serotonin syndrome and it can apparently kill you.

The culprit is dextromethorphan, which is a cough suppressant and is probably in most cold medicines.

Feel free to reblog this because my psychiatrist didn’t warn me and the label on the cough medicine had nothing about this.

if you’re ever worried about possible drug interactions with otc medications/alcohol you can always use https://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html this site if you cant get ahold of your doctor

BYYYYE with my asthma I practically live on cough medicines!!!! And I NEVER knew.

I STUDY THIS SHIT I DID NOT KNOW THIS.

Also:

Serotonin syndrome is typically caused by the use of two or more serotonergic medications or drugs.[2] This may include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), amphetamines, pethidine (meperidine), tramadol, dextromethorphan, buspirone, L-tryptophan, 5-HTP, St. John’s wort, triptans, ecstasy (MDMA), metoclopramide, ondansetron, or cocaine.[2] It occurs in about 15% of SSRI overdoses.[3] It is a predictable consequence of excess serotonin on the central nervous system (CNS).[4] Onset of symptoms is typically within a day of the extra serotonin.[2]

Proof that checking your drug interactions, even with over-the-counter stuff, is absolutely worth the trouble.

FYI, if you make an account, Drugs.com will save your medication list so you don’t have to keep typing it in.

They gave me ondansetron at the ER knowing I was on citalopram and told me to take anti-tussives with dextromethorphan when i had the flu oh my god.

I could have died what the fuck.
