These beautiful animals are the vaquitas, the world’s smallest and most endangered porpoise. There are an estimated 12-30 remaining in the wild and their numbers have been rapidly declining due to being caught in illegal fishing nets.
APROXIMATELY 36 ARE KILLED EACH YEAR. THERE ARE ONLY 30 LEFT. THIS COULD BE THEIR LAST YEAR IF WE DON’T DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!
Donate to conservation foundations like the WWF who work to protect vaquitas! We need to keep this beautiful animal on our planet!!!
Please share this post so we can spread awarness because hardly anyone knows about them!!!
This isn’t great information and this isn’t how conservation or conservation funding works. Just saying “donate to wwf” doesn’t mean the money the wwf get from you goes towards their conservation efforts for vaquitas.
And a quick look into their conservation program shows that the wwf is contributing in partnership with scientific insituations to monitoring population numbers and pushing for law and regulations around fishing practices to change, mainly the use of gillnets in Mexico. While this is fine and all, there’s other non-profits that need help with funding much more then the wwf would.
But to sum it up quickly the population of vaquitas has seen a 99% decline from 1995 to 2018 in which only 30 individuals remain.
This is because of the use of illegal gillnets, that are used to fish for toboaba. This is the only known threat to the species. There’s now a push to further ban the use of gillnet fishing and better regulate and create better sustainable fishing industries.
It is much better to donate to scientific committees or organisations that are focused solely on vaquita conservation and actually provide extensive information on how they use that funding (the wwf is always too vague for me):
The point is to always educate yourself on the organisation before you donate your money and find out how much of it and where it is going towards. And when you’re trying to spread information on an endangered animal it’s not enough to just throw a photo in and tell everyone to donate to [insert] organisation without even discussing or linking to what the organisation does and where the money will go towards.
You also need to provide advice on how to help beyond just donating, especially on this website of all places, where people are underage or usually
