To anyone who follows me, identifies as a woman (or any gender other than male) I have one piece of advice for you – do NOT go into the gaming industry. It sounds horrible, but this is the NORM. Two people lost their livelihood because of roughly three tweets, and then the overreaction of a veritable horde of hateful assholes. A man who had worked for ArenaNet for TWELVE YEARS was fired for defending a woman on Twitter, and I’m absolutely positive the fired him to shield themselves from utterly justified accusations of gender discrimination. Everything about this is wrong, and also par for the course. If you play GW2, ArenaNet just fired a significant chunk of the team who writes the stories you engage with. Guess who they’ll probably replace them with?
The gaming industry will destroy your soul, your sanity, your body. It will expose you to abuses you didn’t even realize exist. You will be expected to perform for men who think rape threats are appropriate responses to the fact you EXIST.
I spent six years in the gaming industry, and it is a nightmare. It is getting worse instead of better, and I can confirm that table top gaming is as bad as video games, if not worse.
Gaming is not safe for you. At this point I question if it will ever be safe. You are worth more than pixels.
I have two friends in the gaming industry who are women, and honestly, listening to some of the shit they go through on a regular, daily basis boils my fucking blood.
