It actually is volunteers though. One of my friend’s ex husband was doing this and they offered it to a bunch of folks and not a lot of people took it, but he did. And they trained him up and he worked with non-incarcerated firefighters. This was the most recent blaze he went to work on, and he’d been in there for a few years.
Once he was out, they actually hired him and gave him a job with them.
Now, to be fair… there’s probably a lot of people that are given this as the only option, but there are still a lot of people who are incarcerated who volunteer for things like this because it gets them out of the yard, as opposed to the training for other jobs where they’re stuck inside the facilities.
As far as the Minors go… that’s garbage. No. Just… fucking no. I mean, we do have youth volunteer firefighters at the station in my old hometown, but they had parental permission and signed a bunch of waivers and weren’t involved in wildfires. This is No Good for them.
