If you feel personally attacked and upset when I talk about the Supernatural fandom, then maybe you need to look closely at how intrinsically you’ve tied yourself to a television show. Because if you can’t separate your own personal actions from the pattern of abusive and misogynistic behavior I’m actually talking about when I talk about “the Supernatural fandom” as a community, and if you take my words as a personal attack on you, and if your kneejerk reaction is to get angry at me for generalizing a community you’ve CHOSEN to associate yourself with rather than recognize that my anger is not about you, then you’re the one with the problem.

I know—I know—that no one likes how I call out fandom behavior. Everyone wants to have a good time and enjoy fandom without feeling bad or guilty. I’m the same way.

But if you can’t recognize that it’s possible to enjoy fandom while also helping someone to not be abused and hurt by it, then how fucking great is your fandom anyway?

SPN fandom prides itself on being a family. What are you prepared to do to make sure everyone who wants to be in your family is safe and welcome?

What kind of fan do you want to be?
